Origins and Fortran I (1957)

  • 1957: IBM introduced Fortran I, the first version of Fortran, designed for scientific and engineering calculations. It was developed by a team led by John Backus at IBM.
  • Features: Fortran I supported basic arithmetic operations, input/output operations, and simple control structures. It was revolutionary because it allowed programmers to write code in a more human-readable form compared to assembly language.
