Geotechnical Engineering and Foundations

Geotechnical engineering deals with the behavior of soil and rock in relation to construction. One of the field’s significant challenges is designing foundations for large structures in unstable or complex soil conditions. The Leaning Tower of Pisa, for instance, began leaning soon after construction started in the 12th century due to the soft ground beneath it. Recent efforts have focused on stabilizing the tower to prevent further tilting.
